Lately we are seeing lots of grackles and starlings around. If you don’t want them taking over your feeders, we have options! Some feeders like the Squirrel Buster Plus can be adjusted so the weight of the grackles close the feeder. This can definitely help slow down their seed consumption!
We also have caged feeders that only allow in the smaller birds like chickadees, finches, sparrows and the downy woodpeckers. If you already have a feeder, we do also have a cage it might fit into. Another option would be a finch feeder. These have very small holes to hold Niger seeds. The grackles and starlings can’t get their larger beaks in. Lastly, offering a seed they simply don’t like can really help. We have a blend of seeds called “Squirrel Free” that, as well as deterring squirrels, also works for the grackles and starlings. There is no peanuts or sunflower seeds in this mix which is what they really want.
