Sherri Friesman – Artist Statement
My art is a creative expression of my love of nature and wildlife and is my attempt to share with others the beauty I observe. Drawing and painting increases my appreciation for the wild creatures and spaces that are all around us but that often go unseen. I get great satisfaction when one of my pieces evokes a memory or feeling in someone – creating a connection for them to the natural world.
My paintings often begin with a memory, a wildlife sighting, a sound, or a pattern. I do a lot of mental visualization before I begin to pull the components together. I then lay out my basic composition and begin adding layers of colours; pulling out patterns as they appear. The watercolour medium presents both challenge an opportunity for me. A challenge in achieving the realism I strive for, and an opportunity to push the creative boundaries of both the subject matter and the medium.
